A method and an apparatus for encoding and decoding multi-view images are provided to perform prediction required to encode and decode multi-view image sequences at a high speed to efficiently encode and decode the multi-view image sequences. It is determined whether pictures included in a multi-view image sequence are reference pictures which are referred to by other pictures included in the multi-view image sequence for inter-view prediction(610). The pictures are encoded using at least one of inter-view prediction and temporal prediction based on the determination result(620).
