An antibiotic resin adsorbate comprises the reaction product of bacitracin and a particulate cross-linked cation-exchange resin consisting of a sulphonated styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, or a monovalent cation salt thereof, e.g. a sodium, potassium or ammonium salt. In examples bacitracin sulphate is reacted with a sodium salt of the resin. The adsorbate finds application as a feed supplement in swine and poultry feeds.ALSO:In a process for the isolation and purification of bacitracin from aqueous solution, the pH of the solution is adjusted to from 3 to 7 (e.g. with sulphuric acid) and the solution is then contacted with a salt of a sulphonated copolymer of styrene with divinyl benzene, to cause adsorption of the bacitracin on the copolymer. Elution of the bacitracin from the adsorbate obtained, may be effected with an aqueous base having a pH of 7.5 to 8.5, e.g. with 2% sodium carbonate solution. In examples bacitracin sulphate is contacted with a sodium salt of the sulphonated copolymer.ALSO:An antibiotic feed supplement comprises a feed acceptable diluent together with an adsorbate of bacitracin on a salt of a sulphonated styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, said adsorbate being present in from 5 to 50 grams of bacitracin activity per pound of supplement. The adsorbates may be used in conjunction with other antibiotic or therapeutic agents such as penicillin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracyline, tetracycline, phenyl arsonic acid or sulphaquinoxaline and may be blended with grains, fish meal, bone meal, soybean meal, limestone, vitamins and amino acid ingredients. In examples specified feed ingredients are corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, alfalfa meal, animal fat, fish meal, corn solubles, whey, brewers' yeast, iodized salt, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, Delamix, methionine, Vitamins A, B12 and D3, riboflavin, calcium pantothenate, niacin, choline chloride, diphenylphenylenediamine, skim milk, sucrose, mineral mix and saccharin. The feed supplements are of particular use for swine and poultry feeds. |
