PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader whose dirt becomes inconspicuous even when it is read by means of an image sensor. SOLUTION: A specifying section 412 specifies the maximum value and the minimum value of image data outputted from each photoelectric conversion element constituting an image sensor 460. A calculating section 413 calculates the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value specified for every photoelectric conversion element at the specifying section 412. If the difference calculated for every photoelectric conversion element at the calculating section 413 is below a predetermined threshold, a determining section 414 determines that dirt exists on the optical axis of the photoelectric conversion element in which the difference is calculated.
