PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting control system and a position detection method capable of simplifying work and shortening working time by automatically detecting the installation positions of a plurality of luminaires disposed at the ceiling surface. SOLUTION: The lighting control system 1 has first and second position detecting apparatus 2, 3 capable of performing radiocommunication of data with a plurality of luminaires 5a-5i (including sensor parts 21) and capable of performing radiocommunication of data with one another, and an operating personal computer 4 capable of performing radiocommunication of data with the first position detecting apparatus 2. The operating personal computer 4 transmits and receives data sequentially to and from the plurality of luminaires 5a-5i by the position detecting apparatus 2, 3 to detect the receive level of each receive data from the luminaires 5a-5i, and carries out arithmetic processing to detect the installation positions of the plurality of luminaires 5a-5i at the ceiling surface 50a based on the detected receive level and a predetermined distance L between the first position detecting apparatus 2 and the second position detecting apparatus 3.
