A ferronickel concentrate is produced by reducing a lateritic ore comprising less than 1.5% w of nickel at a temperature of from 920 DEG to 1120 DEG C. with a CO/CO2 mixture in the presence of a S-compound, such as Na2SO4 or FeSO4 or FeS, and subjecting the reduced product to magnetic separation.
