PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a sealed lead-acid battery excelling in short-circuiting resistance (dendrite short resistance) and also excelling in tensile strength, a cushioning property, an electrolyte leakage property, and the volume of electrolyte retention, in a separator for a sealed lead-acid battery formed of a tiny glass fiber mat; and a sealed lead-acid battery. SOLUTION: In this separator for a sealed lead-acid battery formed of a tiny glass fiber mat having an average fiber diameter not larger than 1.5μm, a porous coating of lead powder-impermeable and electrolyte ion-permeable silica particles is formed on one surface of the tiny glass fiber mat, and the short circuiting time thereof is not smaller than 150% (standard sample comparison).
