PURPOSE:The reaction of a phenol with isobutylene is effected in the presence of a catalyst of an aluminum phenolate, the resulting crude product is crystallized to produce the titled compound of high purity without previous separation of the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of an aluminum salt of a phenol, preferably phenol or 2-tert.-butyl-phenol, the reaction between phenol and/or 2-tert.-butyl- phenol and isobutylene, preferably at a molar ratio of 1-3, is effected and the crude product is crystallized out to give 2,6-di-tert.-butylphenol. Thus, more than 60% of the product in the crude mixture are recovered in 99% purity. The mother liquor containing the catalyst is decomposed at 150-350 deg.C and the catalyst solution free from phenol and isobutylene as thermal decomposition products is recycled to the reactor. |
