Circuits subdivide an input synchronous and asynchronous data stream onto eight-bit words which are supplied to a buffer register. A FIFO buffer stores non-bit words and sends over the line with a bit rate determined by the system. A frame heading register provides a heading word with a frame length word to indicate the number of subsequent data words. A subtraction circuit counts the number of words in a frame which number is the frame length word.
