<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contour detecting device with improved accuracy in detecting the contour of a tooth in a tooth image. <P>SOLUTION: The tooth, gum and background in the tooth image are presumed, and a rectangular range with a prescribed number of pixels is specified in part of the location presumed as the tooth, gum or background. Then, the quantity of characteristics based on the color information of the pixels in the rectangular range is obtained from the data on the tooth image, and the classification vector to maximize the Fisher ratio is computed based on the obtained quantity of characteristics. By comparing the inner product of the computed classification vector and a pixel value vector based on the color information in the pixels in the tooth image other than the pixels inside the rectangular range with a prescribed threshold, which range in the tooth, gum or background the pixels in the tooth image other than the pixels in the rectangular range are located are presumed.
