A composition comprising an extract of Buddleja officinalis Maximowicz is provided to inhibit the expression of cell adhesion molecules(CAMs) induced by TNF-alpha, thereby preventing progress of atherosclerosis. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating atherosclerosis comprises an extract of Buddleja officinalis Maximowicz for inhibiting the activity of a nuclear transcription factor of a vascular endothelial cell, wherein the transcription factor is NF-kappaB. A health supplemental food for preventing atherosclerosis comprises the extract of Buddleja officinalis Maximowicz and a sitologically acceptable food supplemental additive.
