A method for producing a spark plug and a spark plug are provided to improve thermal transmission from an outer electrode chip to an outer electrode base member by forming the intermediate member with a nickel alloy containing nickel of 80 parts by weight or more. A spark plug(100) includes a center electrode(130) and an outer electrode(140). The outer electrode includes a noble metal chip(143), an outer electrode base member(141), an intermediate member(142) and a fused metal unit(146). The noble metal chip faces the center electrode through a discharge gap(G). The intermediate member connects the noble metal chip and the outer electrode base member. The fused metal unit is formed between the noble metal chip and the intermediate member through laser welding. The intermediate member includes a cylindrical column unit(142e) and a flange unit(142d). The cylindrical column unit is coupled to the noble metal chip. The flange unit is coupled to the outer electrode base member and has a diameter larger than that of the cylindrical column.
