PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that fuel is saved by storing surplus energy for running resistance horsepower in a flywheel and utilizing it in inertial running, but a vehicle utilizing a flywheel as power has a problem that it requires high technology involved in high capacity and operability equivalent to that in the case of running only with an engine. SOLUTION: During engine running, the engine is operated at a rotational speed/output for attaining a minimum fuel consumption rate on an equal mileage curve and surplus energy for running resistance horsepower is stored in the flywheel. During inertial running, fuel supply to the engine is stopped. The flywheel is installed in parallel with power transmission to a drive shaft such that it can be coupled/separated, thus increasing a degree of freedom in selection of operation modes. Capacity of the flywheel is suppressed to the level of kinetic energy of a vehicle and the problem can be solved using general purpose technology/material without impairing fuel saving effect. Rotary energy is stored/discharged, as it is, without being converted into electric energy, thus minimizing problems such as loss incident to energy conversion/charge and discharge, complication/overweight of the apparatus, and remarkable rise of the price.
