We have found anti-inflammatory activity in the ecteinascidin compounds. Such compounds have been widely described, and may have the following general formula (I), wherein: R<SUP>5 </SUP>is OH, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy; R<SUP>6 </SUP>is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl; R<SUP>12 </SUP>is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl; R<SUP>16 </SUP>is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl; R<SUP>17 </SUP>is OH, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy; R<SUP>18 </SUP>is OH, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy; R<SUP>21 </SUP>is H, OH, CN or another nucleophilic group; and R<SUP>a </SUP>is hydrogen and R<SUP>b </SUP>is optionally substituted amino, or R<SUP>a </SUP>with R<SUP>b </SUP>form a carbonyl function -O, or R<SUP>a</SUP>, R<SUP>b </SUP>and the carbon to which they are attached form a tetrahydroisoquinoline group.
