<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a cleaning member for cleaning off residual matter on the surface of an image carrier and reversely rotates the image carrier prior to the normal rotation of the image carrier, the image forming apparatus capable of preventing the cleaning member from curling up. <P>SOLUTION: A control section of a printer acquires a printing rate used for the previous printing operation (step S11), and sets, according to the degree of the printing rate, the number (n) of revolutions at which a photoreceptor drum serving as the image carrier is reversely rotated (step S12). If the set number (n) of revolutions is "0", reverse rotation is not performed but the normal rotation of the photoreceptor is started (step S15). Meanwhile, if the number (n) of revolutions is equal to or greater than "1", a reverse rotation process is performed such that the photoreceptor drum is reversely rotated by a prescribed amount, and the operation of rotating the photoreceptor drum by the prescribed amount is repeated the n-number of times (step S14).
