A navigation method and system for avoiding a congested area are provided to provide a user with an optimum way to a destination by using GPS information or data on a common congested area stored therein. A navigation method for avoiding a congested area includes the steps of: determining if the navigation system receives GPS signals during traveling(S220); allowing a driver to avoid a congested area simply based on GPS information if the navigation system receives GPS signals(S222); and allowing the driver to avoid a congested area using data on a common congested area stored in the navigation system according to the traveling speed if the navigation system receives no GPS signals(S240).
