An apparatus and a method for detecting the location of a slider in a portable terminal are provided to minimize the power consumption by judging the location of an upper slider on the basis of the strength of magnetic flux which is generated by the movement of the upper slider. An apparatus for detecting the location of a slider in a sliding-type portable terminal comprises a sensing part(102) and a control part(100). The sensing part measures the strength of magnetic flux which is generated according to the movement of the slider, and provides the measured strength to the control part. The control part, if the strength of magnetic flux is provided from the sensing part, compares the provided strength with a preset threshold in order to judge the location of the slider.
