Disclosed are compounds of formula (I) that modulate Peroxisome Proliferator Activation Receptor (PPAR) activity. Also disclosed are pharmaceutically acceptable salts of the compounds, pharmaceutically acceptable compositions comprising the compounds or their salts, and their use as therapeutic agents for treating or preventing disipidemia, hypercholesteremia, obesity, eating disorders, hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperinsulinemia and diabetes in a mammal as well as suppressing appetite and modulating leptin levels in a mammal. Furthermore, the compounds of the present disclosure are also useful in treating a patient exhibiting glucose disorders associated with circulating glucocorticoids, growth hormone, catecholamines, glucagons, or parathyroid hormone.
