PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy in recognizing engine sound in an engine sound recognizing apparatus that distinguishes the types of engine sound of vehicles. SOLUTION: The engine sound recognizing apparatus 1 is provided with a microphone 11 for collecting engine sound of vehicles and outputting it as sound signals; a pitch period determining part 19 for determining the pitch period of sound signals outputted from the microphone 11; a fundamental sound waveform extracting part 18 for extracting fundamental sound waveforms, by cutting out sound signals in the pitch period determined by a pitch period determination part 19 from the sound signals outputted from the microphone 11; and an engine sound determining part 24 for determining the type of engine sound, on the basis of extracted fundamental sound waveforms.
