An apparatus and a method for controlling a checkpoint are provided to manage a checkpoint region as a file system so as to facilitate maintenance of checkpoint information and obtain a rapid processing speed by using a memory file system. An apparatus for controlling a checkpoint includes at least two nodes(10,20). Each node includes a checkpoint controller(12,22) and a checkpoint storage unit(11,21). The checkpoint controller stores, transfers, changes and deletes checkpoint information to repair system failure. The checkpoint storage unit is set to a shared region of a file system format accessible by any process and stores the checkpoint information. The checkpoint storage unit is a RAM disc. The check point controller assigns a part of the checkpoint storage unit to a checkpoint area.
