PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader capable of being reduced in manufacturing cost and highly accurately detecting the multi-feed of an original. SOLUTION: The tip and the rear end of the original are detected and the multi-feed of the original is also detected based on a received amount of an ultrasonic wave transmitted from a transmitter in a receiver. Thus, the manufacturing cost is reduced by using a mechanism for detecting the tip and the rear end of the original also as a mechanism for detecting the multi-feed of the original. In addition, only when the multi feed is detected by the time of detection of the rear end of the original (an interruption signal permission period T4) after the tip of the original is detected, an interruption signal is inputted to interrupt processing under execution, and processing based on the interruption signal is executed, thereby detecting the multi-feed of the original is highly accurately.
