PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an automatic transmission having a driveability enhanced by preventing the gears from being shifted to an unnecessary shift stage not intended by the driver. SOLUTION: A T-ECU 12 for controlling the gear shift of the automatic transmission 5 mounted on a vehicle 1 comprises a shift control means for controlling the gear shift of the automatic transmission by an automatic gear shift mode or a manual gear shift mode, a shift detection means for detecting the shift indication of the up-shift or down-shift of the automatic transmission 5 operated manually, and an indication time measuring means for measuring the shift indication time in which the shift indication is detected by the shift detection means. When the shift control means controls the gear shift of the automatic transmission by the automatic gear shift mode, the gear shift mode is not moved to the manual shift mode and moved to a shift inhibition mode for inhibiting the gear shift of the automatic transmission according to the shift indication time measured by the indication time measuring means.
