The floating dryer assembly to dry a substrate (4) moving through it, and especially a substrate with a thick coating on one side, has a number of upper and lower jets (2,3) flanking the moving substrate (4). A web guide is at the lower jets (3), at least in one section (a) to force the substrate (4) to move through at a given narrow gap from the jets and without contact with them. The web is stable on a horizontal web plane (10), across the direction of travel, without bending between the jets (2,3).The substrate (4) is supported from below by a gas cushion at a variable speed and volume. At least a section (a) has a cover over the lower jets (3) using a gas-permeable unit (10), fitted with perforations, such as a perforated plate (10) of fine steel mounted at the housing section and/or near the jet(s). The plate guide (10) is sealed against neighboring components, so that the gas flow is directed at the perforations in the plate (10). The plate (10) can have a pot-shaped cross section, fitting at least partially over the jets (3). The structure gives an adjustable gap between the jets (3) and the guide plate (10).
