A flame simulating assembly (20) for providing an image of flames (22) and simulating one or more actual fuel elements in a fire. The flame simulating assembly includes one or more light sources (24), a screen (26) adapted for transmission of the image of flames therethrough, and a simulated fuel bed (32). The simulated fuel bed (32) includes a simulated ember bed (34) and one or more simulated fuel elements (40) positioned on an upper surface of the simulated ember bed. Each simulated fuel element includes a base surface (42) with a light-transmitting portion (44) and an exposed surface (46) which is at least partially viewable. The base surface (42) is positioned proximal to the upper surface (36) of the simulated ember bed (34). The exposed surface includes one or more uncovered portions (48) through which light from the light source (24) is transmittable.
