PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield machine which can monitor the fluidity of earth in a chamber thereof, discovers a location clogged with earth in the chamber in an early stage, and prevents the interior of the chamber from being clogged with the earth, and to provide a method of controlling closure of the interior of the chamber. SOLUTION: In the shield machine 1, earth excavated by a cutter section 7 flows via gaps between cutter spokes 11 into the chamber 8, and discharged via a hole formed in a lower portion of a partition wall 5 by a screw conveyor 22. The cutter spokes 11 have fluidity measuring instruments 17 arranged on one side thereof toward the chamber 8, for measuring earth fluidity values inside the chamber 8. The partition wall 5 has a plurality of earth pressure gauges 19 and temperature gauges 21 set thereon. The earth pressure gauges 19 measure change of the earth pressure of the earth in the chamber 8, and the temperature gauges 21 measure temperatures of the earth in the chamber 8.
