PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation system of a chair type stairway elevator achieving both safety and operability when folding and drawing out of a movable rail in the chair type stairway elevator adopting a rail storage device. SOLUTION: In this chair type stairway elevator, the midpoint close to the end and located in the lower floor side of rails arranged along the wall surface of stairs to guide the elevation movement of a chair 4 is divided, and the upper floor side from the divided section of the rails 2 is considered as a fixed rail 2a to the stairs and the lower floor end side is considered as the movable rail 2b. The movable rail 2b is made rotatable between a position extended relative to the fixed rail 2a and the upper part storing position of the fixed rail 2a. When the movable rail 2b is folded in the upper part storing position, a folding switch 34a of one operation button 34 is pressed, thereby firstly moving the chair 4 automatically to the safe position of the rails 2, and then, folding the movable rail 2b in the storing position.
