To set the vertical motor vehicle headlamp angle, a camera is aligned on the driving direction to register the rear lights of a vehicle in front and/or the lights of an approaching vehicle. When no vehicles are detected in front, the headlight beams are aligned on the camera and vehicle axis. When a vehicle is detected in front, the headlamp angle is shifted vertically.
