An automatic focus control apparatus and a method thereof are provided to improve the reliability by reducing a time for detecting an optimal focus by detecting an optimal focus by calculating and comparing focus values after an image of a subject is divided into a plurality of regions, a set region is classified by groups, and a focus is controlled per group. An automatic focus control apparatus includes a charge coupled device(210), an image processor(220), a display unit(230), a focus calculator(240), a central processing unit(250), and an actuator controller(260). The charge coupled device includes a lens and photographs an image of a subject. The image processor processes a signal of the photographed image from the image processor. The display unit displays the image processed by the image processor. The focus calculator divides the processed signal of the image into plural regions, and classifies set regions of the plural regions by groups to calculate a focus value of each group. The central processing unit compares a focus value of a group among groups of a first frame corresponding to one group of a next frame with that of the one group of the next frame to detect an optical focus value. The actuator controller moves the lens of the charge coupled device to adjust the focus when the focus value of the detected group by the central processing unit is not the optical focus value.
