PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for smoothly recovering an excavator main body while preventing it from being tilted into a forward bent condition due to weight of a cutter plate supported on the excavator main body when recovering it onto a starting shaft side by separating it from an outer shell body of a tunnel excavator after excavating a tunnel. SOLUTION: In this method, the excavator main body 3 is provided in the outer shell body 1 through a first bulkhead 2 having a circular ring shape to pull it out, the tunnel having predetermined length is excavated by the tunnel excavator constituted by supporting a cutter plate 6 for digging the ground in the front on a second bulkhead 5 in the excavator main body 3, then diameter of the cutter plate 6 is contracted to form a cutter plate part 6A having small diameter to pass through the first bulkhead 2, a sled member 9 is mounted in a lower peripheral part of the cutter plate part 6A, and then the cutter plate part 6A is made to pass through the first bulkhead 2 while letting the sled member 9 slide to run onto the first bulkhead 2 by pulling the excavator main body 3 in order to recover it integrally with the excavator main body 3.
