PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an emission direction of an excitation light beam from fluctuation, irrespective of the level of driving electric power input into an acoustooptical element, and to correctly irradiate a sample with the excitation light beam. SOLUTION: This multiphoton excitation type observation device 1 is provided with a pulse laser beam source 4 for emitting an ultra-short pulse laser beam L, an observation device body 3 for irradiating the sample A with the ultra-short pulse laser beam L emitted from the pulse laser beam source 4, and for observing fluorescence F emitted from the sample A, and an acoustic optical device 6, arranged between the pulse laser beam source 4 and the observation device body 3, and for regulating on/off or the output of the ultra-short pulse laser beam L emitted from the pulse laser beam source 4, and the acoustic optical device 6 is provided with a temperature regulator for regulating the temperature of a crystal that generates the acoustooptical effect.
