PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which has superior moving picture display characteristics and uniform in-plane display characteristics and neither rises manufacturing cost nor increases power consumption. SOLUTION: Disclosed is the projector equipped with liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G, and 400B, a projection optical system 600 which projects lighting luminous flux modulated by a liquid crystal device, a lighting device 100 which projects lighting luminous flux having a sectional shape compressed along a (y) axis, and a rotary prism 770 which rotates at a fixed speed to scan with the lighting luminous flux from the lighting device along a (y) axis in an image formation region of the liquid crystal device, the projector being characterized in that the projection optical system 600 further has an optical stop 620 adjusting the quantity of the lighting luminous flux according to the position of the lighting luminous flux on the image formation region S so as to reduce an illuminance difference generated owing to variation in scanning speed of the lighting luminous flux on the image formation region S of the liquid crystal device.
