PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of quickly detecting the sizes of various originals (of many sizes or irregular sizes) placed on an original platen. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a size detection sensor 18 that is a line sensor equipped with a plurality of photodetecting elements 18a arranged in a predetermined axial direction and provided separately from an image reading part 12 and constituted of a contact-type image sensor (CIS); and a size detection sensor drive motor 19 making the size detection sensor 18 move along the lower surface of the original platen 1. Based on the position of the size detection sensor 18 and a photodetecting value (luminance) obtained by the size detection sensor 18 at each position, the size of the original (s) on the original platen 1 is specified.
