A method of self calibrating a positioning system (100), by positioning a reference device (300) provided with reference markings (301,302,303,310) at different calibration locations (402-407), and sensing the positions of the reference markings at each calibration location. The calibration parameters are selected such that differences in relative positions of the sensed locations, expressed in actual coordinates for different calibration locations are reduced or preferably minimized.
