METHOD FOR INPUTTING CHARACTER OF PORTABLE TERMINAL

A method for inputting characters in a mobile terminal is provided to reduce a size of the mobile terminal with removal of a keyboard type input device by displaying a first display window and a virtual keypad, and inputting the characters with a ring type wheel key and a selection key installed to the center of the wheel key. A first display window and a virtual keypad are displayed when a character input mode is selected, and the first display window includes a cursor for displaying a character input position. The virtual keypad is equipped with a plurality of virtual keys and puts a focus on the virtual key. The focus is moved on the virtual keypad when a rotation signal is received from a wheel key(219). A character assigned to the focused virtual key is displayed to a position of the cursor when an input signal is received from a selection key(225). The cursor is moved to the back of the displayed character when the cursor can be moved to the back of the displayed character(231). The first display window is refreshed by displaying a second display window for moving the characters displayed in the first display window when the cursor can not be moved to the back of the displayed character(235).
