A contents display device in a sliding-type portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to display and search contents quickly and conveniently as saving operation time for displaying and searching the corresponding contents. When contents are displayed on a main display unit while a sliding unit is in up state, a type of a display mode is decided on(901,903). If the display mode is the first display mode, all contents of the same level are displayed on the main display unit, and the rest of the contents are displayed on a sub display unit(904,905). If the display mode is the second display mode, the contents are displayed on the main display unit, and contents of a lower level of the contents selected on the main display unit are displayed on the sub display unit(906,907).
