A fuel processor 10 is provided for processing a carbon-based fuel, the processor comprising a fuel processing chamber 22 which is arranged, in use, substantially upright. In use, fuel to be processed moves downwards through the chamber, and heated processing gas A moves upwards through the chamber. The fuel may be discharged from the processor through a processed fuel outlet 20 with the rate of discharge controlled by a discharge unit. By varying the rate of discharge of the discharge unit, the residence time of the fuel in the processor can be finely controlled. Furthermore, the fuel moves downwards through the processor under the influence of gravity, ensuring that the first product in is the first product out. |
