An image forming apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to prevent deterioration of image quality due to loss of original image data caused by a masking process by converting coordinates of reduced image data. An image forming apparatus includes an image input unit(100), a video controller(110), and an exposure unit(120). The image input unit provides original image data to the video controller. The video controller reduces the original image data from the image input unit, and performs a coordinate conversion to change a printing position of the reduced image data. The video controller generates a video data by processing the image data and supplies the video data to the exposure unit. Th exposure unit includes a laser diode(121) irradiating laser beam to a photosensitive body and a controller(122) controlling a drive of the laser diode for the mask process in a toner image at a printing operation.
