PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of a cataphoresis phenomenon while adopting a blink-dimming lighting method. SOLUTION: The mercury discharge lamp lighting device 10 is provided with a DC power supply part 1 to convert AC power into DC power, an inverter part 2 which supplies a high frequency power to a mercury discharge lamp 19 during the lighting period in the blink-dimming lighting and stops supply of the high frequency power during the lights-out period, a step-up part 3 which applies a high voltage between the electrodes of the mercury discharge lamp 19, and a DC voltage component suppressing part 4 which suppresses the DC voltage component between the electrodes of the mercury discharge lamp 19.
