PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of appropriately assisting the movement of a cleaner main body corresponding to tensile force applied from a communication pipe to a cleaner main body. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner for driving wheels for traveling by the traveling motor 15 of a drive means and making the cleaner main body self-travel as a premise is provided with a memory 48, a detection means 36 and a microcomputer 46. The memory 48 sets a threshold. The detection means 36 is provided with a strain gauge 22 for detecting force applied to a communication pipe attaching part when moving the cleaner main body through the communication pipe in a cleaning operation holding the communication pipe communicated with a suction port for sucking dust and attached to the communication pipe attaching part of the cleaner main body. The detection means 36 outputs a voltage signal corresponding to the force detected by the strain gauge 22. The computer 46 compares the threshold and the voltage signal outputted from the distortion gauge 22, and drives the traveling motor 15 so as to move the cleaner main body forward when the voltage signal exceeds the threshold.
