PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a primary heat transfer surface type heat exchanger, reducing thermal stress generated in a heat transfer core, restraining bypass flow generated in a gap to a housing, and easily positioning the heat transfer core. SOLUTION: This primary heat transfer surface type heat exchanger includes a heat transfer core where primary heat transfer surfaces are stacked with alternations of a high temperature fluid passage and a low temperature fluid passage formed between the respective layers. The heat exchanger includes the heat transfer core and a housing storing the heat transfer core with a gap, wherein a flexible pressing spacer having flexibility is installed on the inner surface of the housing to seal the gap between the heat transfer core and the housing. Thus, the gap between the heat transfer core and the housing is sealed to restrain a bypass flow, and the heat transfer core is abutted on the pressing spacer, thereby facilitating positioning of the heat transfer core. The generation of thermal stress due to differences in thermal expansion and heat contraction between the heat transfer core and the housing can be restrained by the pressing spacer having flexibility.
