A hole coring system ( 10) is provided that greatly stabilizes a tubular core drill bit (20) for drilling into concrete or other materials enabling large diameter holes to be drilled with a handheld tool. The system includes a hollow drive shaft assembly (38) that fits over a stationary mandrel (12) that is initially installed and anchored in a pilot hole in the concrete or other material. Once the mandrel (12) has been firmly installed as a guidepost extending rigidly out from the concrete surface, the hollow drive shaft assembly (38) is lowered onto the mandrel (12). The drive shaft assembly (38) is stabilized relative to the mandrel (12) by means of elongated, cylindrical bearing sleeves (54), which may be formed of self-lubricated or fluid lubricated bearing materials. The mandrel (12) serves as a central guidepost that ensures that a relatively large tubular core drill bit (20) remains precisely centered relative to the guide mandrel (12).
