PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional composition enabling stable manufacturing of paper through being applied onto a press roll, and to provide a method for improving releasability using the composition. SOLUTION: The functional composition, which is used by being applied to a press roll for dewatering wet paper, contains 2 mass% or more of a compound represented by general formula (1) [wherein, R is a 10-16C hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; p and r are each an integer of 0-30, and q is an integer of 0-2, wherein the sum of p and r is an integer of 6-30, and p, q and r are each not 0 at the same time].
