PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing aγ-butyrolactone derivative in high purity in high yield by a simple operation in a mild condition by a produceable method at industrial level. SOLUTION: The method for producing theγ-butyrolactone derivative represented by formula (II) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>5</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-6C linear or branched alkyl group, a 2-6C linear or branched alkenyl group or a 6-12C aryl group) includes reacting an epoxy alcohol with carbon monoxide in an aprotic solvent in the presence of a cobalt compound and an azole compound.
