A key input method of a portable terminal and a device thereof are provided to enable a user to activate/inactivate randomly character input keys, thereby reducing the number of times that the keys are inputted, consequently the user can input characters conveniently and efficiently. An indicator area where plural character input keys are allocated is activated in character input mode(S801-S813). Activation or inactivation for more than one of the character input keys is selected on the basis of a user's selection among the plural character input keys(S815). If character input is sensed after the activation or the inactivation for the character input keys, input of characters corresponding to more than one of the activated character input keys is controlled(S817-S827).
