A method and a device for protecting important data of contents are provided to protect the important data included in the contents by receiving the contents and reference data, which is combined with the important data and authentication data for verifying modification of the important data, and correcting the important data included in the received contents based on the reference data. A receiver(110) receives contents including important data and reference data, which is combined with the important data and authentication data for verifying modification of the important data. A data corrector(130) selectively corrects the important data included in the received contents based on the received reference data. A modification determiner(120) determines whether the important data included in the reference data is modified. The modification determiner includes a separator separating the reference data into the important data and the authentication data, an authentication data generator generating the authentication data for the separated important data, and a comparator determining the modification by comparing the generated authentication data with the separated authentication data.
