A drive apparatus for a reciprocating tool comprises a housing 12, a rotatable drive shaft assembly 30 located in the housing, and an elongate plunger 28 located in the housing for reciprocating motion. The elongate plunger has a front end portion for attaching a tool, and a rotary joint rocker mechanism (50, fig 3) supported in the housing and operatively connected to the plunger and the drive shaft assembly, so that rotation of the drive shaft assembly produces reciprocating motion of the plunger without any sliding friction. Preferably the tool is a reciprocating saw 10. The rotary joint rocker mechanism may comprise first and second guide rockers 52, 54, each pivotally connected to the plunger and the housing. A counterweight assembly 80 may be provided, which has a counterweight movable in the opposite direction to the plunger. |
