A method of characterizing a multiphase mixture, comprising irradiating the mixture with X-rays collecting photons emanating from the mixture in response to irradiation; generating a signal responsive to the aggregate energy of the collected photons; and, analyzing the signal to characterize the mixture. This invention further includes an apparatus fo r characterizing a multiphase mixture, comprising: an X-ray source irradiating the mixture; a detector collecting photons emanating from the mixture in response to irradiation, the detector generating a signal responsive to the aggregate energy of the collected photons; and means for analyzing the signal to characterize the mixture.
