A contact type card reader, a method of controlling the card reader and a TV set having the card reader are provided to place an additional card connector which comes into contact with an IC(Integrated Circuit) card to detect whether the IC card is normal at a card insertion so as to protect an internal circuit of the card reader. A contact type card reader(10) includes a card insertion(11) into which an IC card is inserted, a first card connector(13) coming into contact with the IC card to detect whether the IC card is normal, a second card connector(15) provided in the card insertion in secondarily contact with the IC card, and a reader controller(17). The reader controller performs communication with the IC card, opens the card insertion to bring the IC card into contact with the second card connector to read information of the IC card when a reset response is detected from the IC card connected through the first card connector and closes the card insertion when the reset response is not detected.
