A battery pack (106) includes battery terminals (202) operable to be electrically coupled to one or more batteries (228). The battery pack (106) also includes a printed circuit board (204) electrically coupled to the battery terminals (202). The printed circuit board (204) is operable to receive operating power from the one or more batteries (228) and/or provide operating power to one or more external devices. The printed circuit board (204) could provide power to a transmitter and/or one or more sensors in a process control system. The printed circuit board (204) could also include a transmitter or other industrial instrument. The battery pack (106) further includes a removable carrier (214) attached to the printed circuit board (204). The removable carrier (214) is operable to be inserted into and removed from a housing (102) in order to insert the apparatus into the housing (102) and remove the apparatus from the housing (102). The housing (102) could, for example, represent a cylindrical casing forming part of a pipe.
