摘要 <p>Provided is an orientation division type liquid crystal display having a vertical orientation type liquid crystal layer. A sufficiently stable orientation state is achieved only through an orientation regulation structure provided on one substrate and leakage of light is suppressed during display of black. The liquid crystal display has a plurality of pixel regions defined, respectively, by a first electrode provided on the liquid crystal layer side of a first substrate and a second electrode provided on a second substrate to oppose the first electrode through the liquid crystal layer. In each pixel region, a plurality of regions having different inclining orientation of liquid crystal molecule are formed when a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes. The first electrode has a lower conductive layer, a dielectric layer covering the lower conductive layer at least partially, and an upper conductive layer provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the dielectric layer. The upper conductive layer has an opening or a slit, and the lower conductive layer is provided oppositely to the opening or slit. When a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, the potential V&lt;SUB&gt;0&lt;/SUB&gt; of the lower conductive layer and the potential V&lt;SUB&gt;1&lt;/SUB&gt; of the upper conductive layer have a predetermined relation, and such an electric field as the equipotential line rises toward the second substrate side is created in the liquid crystal layer in a region corresponding to the opening or slit.</p>
