PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which can be prevented from being increased in cost as a whole, even when lights of four colors are used and to provide an illumination device. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device 100 includes an intermediate image forming unit 40 which is provided between a cross dichroic cube 20A and a dichroic cube 20B and forms the image of a liquid crystal panel 30 modulating color component light synthesized by the cross dichroic cube 20A, on the incident surface of the dichroic cube 20B, and a projection lens unit 110 which projects synthesized light emitted from the dichroic cube 20B.
